NIGELLA’S SWEET & SALTY CRUNCHY NUT BARS

Nigella's sweet and salty

The Food Network is played in my flat pretty much constantly and over the Christmas period Nigella seemed to be on so much, it almost felt like she spent Christmas with us! I know most of her recipes by heart now but one that popped up recently that I hadn’t noticed before, was for her Sweet and Salty Crunchy Nut Bars. Chocolate melted with butter and syrup and then poured into a bowl of salted peanuts and crushed Crunchie bars….amazing. First my mouth started watering, then my tummy started rumbling and I knew I had to make them.

The beauty of this recipe is that it is so easy to get your hands on the ingredients, it takes minutes to make then they just need to be chilled in the fridge. Anyone can do this and your friends will LOVE you for making them.

Ingredients
200g/7oz dark chocolate
100g/3.5oz milk chocolate
125g/4.4oz butter
3 tbsp golden syrup
250g/8.8oz salted peanuts
6 x 40g Crunchie bars
1 baking or foil tray, approximately 30 x 20 x 5 cm. (if using a baking tray, line with parchment or greaseproof paper)

ingredients

In a saucepan, break up the chocolates into pieces and add the butter and golden syrup. Melt gently under low heat.

Tip the peanuts into a bowl and crush the Crunchie bars on top of them.

Take the melted chocolate mix off the heat and pour over the peanuts and crushed Crunchie bars then mix together and pour into the prepared tin.

P1180035

Smooth the top of the mixture and make sure it gets into all the corners.

P1180038

Place in the fridge for at least 2 hours or until its set, then cut into as many pieces as you like.  I went for 24.

And that’s it! What could be simpler?

These are seriously good. The salt in the peanuts balances out the sweetness of the chocolate and the honeycomb beautifully.

So easy, so fattening but oh SO good! But I warn you, they’re totally addictive. You can’t just stop at one.

Yes, I think it would probably kill you in the end. But you’d die happy! 😉

This looks amazing! I have never seen a Crunchie bar before, so we must not have them in the US. Sigh.

    • Reply A Spoonful Of Sugar 9th January 2013 at 2:57 pm

Oh no! I thought you would have them in the States. Its essentially chocolate covered honeycomb. Do you have anything like that? I guess you could make your own honeycomb and crumble it in. Its super easy to make – http://aspoonfulofsugarblog.com/2012/07/01/honeycomb-happiness/

Thank you for the link, I was scratching my head about the honeycomb as all the commerical ones all use wheat glucose and my hubby on GF diet. He loves chocolate, sometime I think more than he loves me! I am going to make this salty n sweet chocolate nut bar as a Father’s Day present for him. Thanks a million!

Omg, this is amazing! I can already imagine trying different versions with peanuts, almonds, nuts, cookies etc!

    • Reply A Spoonful Of Sugar 9th January 2013 at 5:12 pm

Yeah me too! Just make sure you use salted nuts as you need the salt to balance out the sweetness.

      • Reply testingnyc 11th January 2013 at 6:04 pm

I can handle the sweetness even if they are not salted. I grew up in a country where the sweets are very sweet. 🙂

Do I need to lightly grease the pan first?

    • Reply A Spoonful Of Sugar 21st January 2014 at 5:02 pm

You don’t need to, you can just put the baking parchment/greaseproof paper in the tin and then add the mix into it. If you lightly grease the tin beforehand, it just makes it easier for the paper to ‘grip’ the tin when you’re pouring the mix in. But its not necessary.

[…] Zebra exhibited at this year’s PIPA conference held at Latimer Place in Chesham.   It was an action packed two days and Jill had a great time meeting existing clients and, hopefully, new ones.   The Break Out sessions were very informative and the speakers were knowledgeable and presented their talks in an easy-to-understand manner.  It was great to talk to so many people and to understand more about the challenges they face in a such a fast-paced environment.   Jill’s home-made chocolates seemed to go down well and for anybody who didn’t receive the recipe, here it is.  http://aspoonfulofsugarblog.com/2013/01/09/nigellas-sweet-salty-crunchy-nuts-bars/ […]

Agree with everyone here. People go NUTS when I make these things. Sometimes right out of the blue, people will ask me if I am making another batch soon! My top tip though is that they turn out absolutely great just using sainsburys 50p bars of chocolate. Noone has ever mentioned or questioned the difference between this and the super expensive Green and Blacks bars, trust me.

My husband made these today after trying someone else’s, OMG, they are sooooooo delicious, does anyone know how long they keep?

  • Reply emma 26th April 2019 at 3:52 pm

Love this recipe thank you. Do the bars have to be kept in the fridge or will they be ok in a tin?
    Thanks

  • Reply Joe Besee 16th September 2019 at 1:15 pm

Yes, a colleague introduced me to these a few years ago and I have made them many times since then. Like Stephen Mead I have experimented with different flavours / quality of chocolate and all have been successful. Would recommend cutting them into slices before they have finally set in the fridge. Very simple delicious recipe and never have any complaints.

I’ve made this several times now and love it. Couple of family members don’t like salted nuts of any kind so wondering what you might suggest as a substitute?
